Frederick Kids Triathalon

Volunteers are needed for the Frederick Kids Triathlon on May 24 at Frederick High School.

The event, designed for youngsters aged 7–13, will begin at 8:00 am. The swim is 100 meters, the bicycle leg is 2 miles and the run is three-quarters of a mile.

The race is a fundraising event for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. It would be fun for us to have a good showing of volunteers from the Frederick Pedalers.

If you are interested you can contact volunteer coordinator Martha Herman from a link to her email on the Triathlon web page below.

What Hoe ?

By Ann Abeles

Fred and I ride our bicycles a lot - but not very fast. At our speed, we often find things along the road in addition to the common trash such as screwdrivers, nuts and bolts, unopened beer cans, cell phones, dead ‘possums, etc. However, lately our finds in Frederick County have been more interesting.

The stretch of Mountaindale Road between the Bethel and Masser intersections has yielded a good garden hoe as well as a Corning Centura plate that matched our everyday dishes. As we cycled along Ford Road last week we found a plastic shipping bag similar to the ones our mail-order drugs arrive in. On further inspection, the bag was unopened and apparently contained some medication for a resident a little farther along Bethel road. So we rode over there and put the package in their mailbox. (Now we know where our missing mail goes. It evidentially falls off the truck while the delivery person is struggling with the unwieldy amounts of junk mail they must deliver.)

World renowned Hoe collector Fred Abeles

This past Sunday we were cycling along Opossumtown Pike towards town, when we found a set of car keys including an elaborate one with an unusual key and electronic fob. The set of keys also included a grocery store bonus card. On Monday, we were able to contact the store's main office to give them the number from the card. They were able to locate the card - and keys’ owner. A very sheepish man called us to claim the keys. The fancy one belonged to his wife’s Jaguar. He had opened the door for her at FCC and left the keys in the door. She had driven off and the keys fell out along Opossumtown. He was very grateful to get them back as Jaguar charges over a hundred dollars to reprogram the car for a new set of keys.

The moral of our story is to keep your eyes open. The roadsides of Frederick County are a treasure trove. (We also pick up stuff during our 3 month sojourn in Florida. Mostly we pick up recyclable trash, about 1 plastic grocery store bag every 10 miles, but we also found a working cell phone. After a number of calls, we were finally able to locate someone in the phone list who knew the owner and had him contact us. He was pretty happy to get his phone back.)
