Frederick Kids Triathalon

Volunteers are needed for the Frederick Kids Triathlon on May 24 at Frederick High School.

The event, designed for youngsters aged 7–13, will begin at 8:00 am. The swim is 100 meters, the bicycle leg is 2 miles and the run is three-quarters of a mile.

The race is a fundraising event for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. It would be fun for us to have a good showing of volunteers from the Frederick Pedalers.

If you are interested you can contact volunteer coordinator Martha Herman from a link to her email on the Triathlon web page below.

Remember the Future

By Candidate Bill Preston

Greetings from the future, fellow Pedalers. You are probably thinking that I am off my nut — of course, if you’ve read any of my previous stuff, you already know it. Nonetheless, I've been thinking a lot lately about time travel. At least, as it pertains to my bicycling.

I have found that I seem to be experiencing "missing periods" in my day—especially when I am on my bike—and cannot account for them. Beatrice (my lovely spouse) thinks I am having "senior moments" — or perhaps heart-related ailments. I think there's a much more rational explanation for these "missing moments". On my daytime bicycle rides (I am retired) I am traveling into the future.

Ah, you might scoff. Allow me to elaborate.

Just last week I was cycling north of town, climbing Putman Road. It is quite a nice hill, and I find it gets the blood boiling (know what I mean, Beatrice?). I was about half-way up the climb, when I began to feel light-headed. Rather than ease off (as my doctor recommends), I gave out an extra "ummph" to get myself to the top. The next thing I knew, I was sailing on the downhill side at 40 miles per hour. The only rational explanation for this is that I "leaped" into the future. It was only about thirty seconds, but I call that significant. I don’t remember the second half of the hill climb, nor the accompanying aches and pains, therefore I must not have experienced them. I jumped out of my present self and into my future self.

Is this great or what?

Now that I think of it, there are lots of bicycle rides where I've had these experiences. Where I cannot recall the pain of a hill climb or an exceptional headwind. I really don't know how long I've been time traveling.

My next project will be to try to use this to my advantage in setting a new personal record for a century. If I time-travel just right, I think I can get my time down to about an hour and a half.

Keep the rubber side down.
