Not Riding at Night? Here's What You're Missing

For the past several years, we've run Wednesday evening rides which go south and west into the Adamstown, Middletown and Jefferson areas. If you've not had the opportunity to try one of these rides, this is what we’ve experienced so far.
  •   A wintertime sunset—ice crystals in the clouds forming beautiful patterns — even an occasional "sun pillar".
  •   Comet Hale-Bopp, shining brightly in the twilight sky.
  •   Lights in the distance and stars overhead, as you crest the "big hill" on Mountville Rd.
  •   The International Space Station passing brightly overhead, only to vanish suddenly as it passes into earth’s shadow.
  •   Turning our lights off on Cap Stine Rd, under the brightest full moon of the century in Autumn 1999 and seeing almost as well as in daylight.
  •   The soft, inviting glow of the lighted windows of country homes staring back at us as we pass silently down the roadway.
  •   The wintertime silence—no lawn mowers, few automobiles.
  •   The deafening wintertime winds.
  •   Farm houses decorated with colorful Christmastime light displays.
  •   Bill Preston’s poetic singing.
  •   Safety—we've had zero accidents.
  •   The inviting smells of dinner emanating from Adamstown homes.
  •   The not-so-inviting smells of the ride leader hitting a live skunk.
  •   A Lemond bicycle decked out in holiday lights.
  •   Meteors
  •   The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
  •   Twenty-five miles and no bugs swallowed.
  •   Biting into a hot Luke's pizza after a cold evening ride.
  •   Screaming "Hi Steve!" and "Hi Mary" as we cycle past the Adamstown home of Steve and Mary Walter.
So why not join us this year, starting this month? You’ll need a decent set of lights (visit a local bike shop or contact clubmail@frederickpedalers.org for advice. A rear red light is also necessary. We also recommend reflective clothing and/or vest and dressing in warm layers when the cold weather sets in.

Funny (Scary) Foto of the Month

The new Bill Preston Cycling Doll® will be hitting store shelves just in
time for the coming holiday season. While the fire engine red cycling
attire is authentic including the George Will signature bow tie, the
manufacturer somehow overlooked Bill's trademark day-glow orange helmet . . .
