2005 Year in Review Photos

A roundup of some photos from various rides and events have been consolidated into a single collection on the Photo Gallery page.

Outdoors Maryland Covered Bridges Feature

Members of the Frederick Pedalers Bicycle Club participated October 27, 2005 in an Outdoors Maryland feature on covered bridges. The popular and award winning Maryland Public Television show was filming a special on covered bridges in the state of Maryland and highlighted the three bridges located in Frederick County.

In order to provide some action to an otherwise stationary bridge, Outdoors Maryland invited the Frederick Pedalers to provide some colorful scenery. Club members rode through each of the three bridges throughout the day while the ODM crew rolled tape.

The event caught the attention of our local paper The Frederick News Post and you can read their article here.

See some additional pictures from the event in the Photo Gallery

The completed feature should air on MPT sometime in the spring of 2006. Watch this space for details on when the program will run.

The Bicycle Escape

Yes, it's what we do every time we go out for a ride, but it's also the name of a new bike shop in Frederick. The Bicycle Escape opened in the Shops of Monocacy in November and features a full-service bicycle shop along with a large selection of adult and children’s bicycles and accessories, cycling apparel, and the opportunity to be custom fitted for the most comfortable sized bike available.

Check out their web site or stop by and say hi:

Important Points of Helmet Fitting

The advice below was penned by Dorcas Adkins, the Washington Area Bicycling Association’s safety program manager.
  •  The helmet should sit forward on the head so that the front rim sits no more than two fingers width above the eyebrows. This ensures that the helmet projects farther forward than the nose or chin, thus protecting them.

  •  The straps should be adjusted so that the side straps meet in a "V" just below the earlobes, by sliding the side buckles to a position just below the ears.

  •  Last, and only after the side straps have been adjusted, the chin strap should be adjusted tight enough that only two fingers can be inserted between it and the chin. Ideally, the helmet should move when the mouth is opened.
Some new helmets have an adjustment in the back to tighten the inner band around the head. This should be as tight as is comfortable. Foam pads of differing thickness that come with new helmets should be changed if necessary to obtain a close but comfortable fit.
