Should You Always Ride Far to the Right?

Many folks think you are supposed to ride as far to the right as possible so that you may "stay out of the way" of motor traffic. Actually, keeping right means "ride as far to the right as is safe."

For example, move left:
- when passing others or turning left
- to avoid parked cars, moving vehicles, or people
- to avoid animals, objects, surface debris, hazards
- in a vehicle lane too narrow for a bicycle and another
vehicle to pass safely, side by side, within the lane

Tour of Hope DC Ride
