Coast to Coast to Cure Cancer (C4)

A group of four intrepid cyclists are embarking on a cross country ride this summer to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. If possible, Frederick Pedalers will plan a ride to coincide with their route through the area. As they travel toward their destination in Delaware, they will ride from Hancock to Westminster on day 29 of the trek. Bicycle Builder Dies in Crash in Carrol County

July 15, 2005

Thomas J. Bruni, a bicycle builder from Hamilton (just outside of Baltimore) was killed last month while cycling in Carroll County.

He designed and built innovative mountain, road and tandem bikes that were very popular (some Frederick Pedalers ride Bruni bicycles). On Saturday July 9, while riding one of his bikes, the fifty-four-year old Mr. Bruni was injured in a collision with a minivan at an intersection near Westminster and died at Carroll Hospital Center.

He started his own business, Bruni Bicycles, in 1990. His bikes were made with British-made steel tubing rather than aluminum, carbon fiber or titanium, and they weighed no more than 17.5 to 23 pounds.

Mr. Bruni was killed when he disregarded (or did not see) a stop sign. He is the second cyclist to be killed in the Washington/Baltimore area in the last two months in this manner. (This is not meant to "throw stones" at anyone. It is simply to state that we ALL need to be very careful, because even the best of us can make fatal mistakes — ed.)

His website remains—you can check it out at http://www.brunibicycles.com

Ride with Lance Armstrong in the Tour of Hope 2005

Registration is now open for the Tour of Hope's DC Fundraising Ride on Oct. 8. All of the funds raised will benefit cancer research through the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Tour of Hope's partner organizations. In 2003 and 2004, the Tour of Hope raised more than $2 million. Participants may choose between a 50-mile ride beginning in rural Maryland or a 10-mile ride starting in Glen Echo, Md.

Use of Cell Phone for Emergency Contacts

Here’s an interesting idea:

Store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your emergency contact is and be able to contact him/her.

You can even list multiple contacts by using " I C E 1" , "I C E 2", etc.
