These colorful individuals are largely oblivious to motorized traffic and apparently share a devout belief that the local roads are actually part of some secret federal cycling park system. I'm all in favor of seeing bike paths built on road sides but I'm tired of cresting my local roads and finding some spandexius peddling (sic) along in the center of the highway doing five miles an hour. Please pass a law that bars such activity on roads posted 35 mph or higher! You can fine the offenders and use the money to build bike paths. Either that or make non-county residents buy a permit to bike here; I doubt that most of these cyclists really live here anyway; the wide eyed disbelief when they spot a cow or gun rack in a pick-up truck is a dead giveaway. This is not the first time I’ve seen an ignorant opinion by Mr. Lulie in print. About eight years ago this fellow took a similar shot at cyclists in a Frederick News-Post column. Oddly enough, he also wrote a beautiful column called "I Remember Christmases Past and...". Go figure. In the past I've ignored Mr. Lulie's comments. However, Mr. Lulie's courage to place his foot so deeply in his mouth and show his ignorance for all to see should not go unrewarded. So the next time you are out there, riding legally and safely (as all our club members and the majority of cyclists do), think kindly of Mr. Lulie — the recipient of the Summer 2005 Ignorant Motorist Award. And take pleasure in knowing that, while you might be delaying his trip by ten seconds, you are likely elevating his heart rate and giving him a workout that he probably badly needs. Contemplate These From John Gantnier:In celebration of the 100 year anniversary of Einstein's theory of special relativity, I offer the following (as applied to me in particular): E=MC2 - where M equals the weight of the rider, C equals the cost of the bicycle and E equals the rider’s ego. Wave Length Shift – hills always appear to be longer going up than during the descent. Mass/Gravity/Time Relationship – the greater the rider's mass effects the time that weight can be put on versus the time it takes to shed the same weight; and the farther the rider is from the ride termination point, the slower time passes.
