Send it to us at clubmail@frederickpedalers.org Children's Health & Safety Fair and Bicycle Rodeo The folks at SAFE KIDS are holding their annual Bike Safety fair in Frederick this year at Ballenger Creek Elementary School on Kingsbrook Drive on Friday May 6th. We need volunteers for all or part of the time period 4:30 - 8:00 pm. We will inspect kids' bikes, pump up tires, and generally point the way. Contact Bill Smith or clubmail@frederickpedalers.org to volunteer for this event.History in Motion at The Point of Rocks This event is partnered between the Point of Rocks Community Historical Society (PORCHS), C&O Canal National Historical Park, and the C&O Canal Funds of the Community Foundation of Frederick County, MD.The goal of this one-day, one-time event will be to bring attention to all aspects of the C&O Canal and its history and connection to transportation history in Frederick County. Transportation is still making its own history with every pass of a canal rider or walker today. Please come out for this unique event and visit the History In Motion web site for more information. Adopt-A-Road Pickup Please join us, won't you, for the first pickup of the 2005 season. The first time out for the year is always the most interesting as we see what cool and yucky stuff people left behind from the past winter. If you need further coaxing, Bill always brings ubber-bagels from Panera. We'll meet at 9:00 AM at the Bethel E.L. Church. Volunteers Needed for Safety Awareness Day at Fort Detrick We need two volunteers to staff our table at Fort Detrick’s Safety Awareness Day on Thursday, May 19. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The happy volunteers get to meet the folks from the Fort and answer questions about bicycling and the bike club. Please contact Bill Smith or clubmail@frederickpedalers.org to volunteer. If you can not staff all four hours, two would be fine.Bike to Work Day Join thousands of area cyclists for a celebration of bicycling as a clean and fun form of transportation at Bike to Work Day 2005! This year's event will take place on Friday, May 20th at locations around the Washington region. Each pit stop will offer breakfast, entertainment, dynamic speakers and chances to win bicycles and other prizes. Register for Bike to Work Day by May 14th to receive a free t-shirt and for a chance to win a free bike from City Bikes! The schedule has not been divulged yet by county staff, but we expect that it will consist of the usual ride with Mayor Dougherty from City Hall to the MARC train station. Expected start time is 7:00 a.m. As details are brought to us, we shall e-mail them out to all of the club members. Please visit the WABA Web Site for all the details on Bike to Work Day. Western Maryland Rail-Trail Expanded Ann and Fred Abeles have reported to us that the Western Maryland Rail-Trail (Fort Frederick to Hancock and beyond) has been expanded by three miles at the northern end of the trail. The official opening will be in May.The trail length from the parking lot near Ft. Frederick is now over twenty three miles. Of course, the part from Hancock west is the most scenic. The new trailhead off Pearre (reached via Woodmont Rd from I-68, exit 77) is just above lock 56. There is a gravel road down to the canal and a bridge across to the towpath, so round trips using the paved trail and then the C&O back are doable.
