Adopt-A-Road Pickup October 25, 2003

Apparently the frigid 50 degree temperatures kept the crowds away as only three people attended the Frederick Pedalers Adopt-A-Road pickup on October 25, 2003. Braving the elements in their heaviest Polar Tec fleece were "Bottle" Bill Smith, John "Scrappy" Munns and Brian "Grabber®" King. The 1.5 mile stretch of Bethel Road between Opossumtown Pike and Mountaindale Road was ready and waiting when we set out around 9:00 AM, bags in hand, ready to beautify what others had spoiled.

The Opossumtown Pike end of the route is usually cleaner, so there wasn't much to gather at first but as we worked our way north, things got more interesting. Without going into too much gory detail, suffice it to say that if you want to learn about Frederick County culture, attend a roadside pickup as you're bound to be surprised at some of the things you'll find. One good (or bad depending on your point of view) thing about this pickup was that the cooler temps had thinned some of the undergrowth and we hauled in a number of items that had escaped previous collections.

We finished up around 11:30 AM with a good six bags of trash and one bag of glass bottles. Not quite the haul as compared to earlier in the year, but a cleaner roadside is nothing to complain about. Come join us in the spring as debris from the long hard winter is bound to prove interesting.
